posted 7th September 2008 Moving Forward Working together for the betterment of all Australian amputees, whilst maintaining our own individual State identities, should be a worthy aim of each of our State Golf Associations. Assisting other associations when and where possible. is both mutually beneficial and desirable for all concerned. A recent example of Amputee Golf Associations cooperating has been QAGA’s relationship with the Courtyard Marriott, Surfers Paradise, who were originally referred to us by Gary Hart of the South Australian Amputee Golf Association. Thanks SAAGA !
| posted 4th August 2008 Q.A.G.A. NEWSLETTER EDITOR: GRAHAM KENYON Vol. Number 2 Issue Number 4 2008 JUNE / JULY /AUG Editorial Hi Everyone.! It really looks like the weather is against us this year, once again our monthly event was rain affected and had to be reduced to a 9 Hole event. Still our loyal band of supporters were there once again. It is very encouraging to see our friends and families getting behind us regardless of the conditions. A couple of very important events took place recently. The Q.A.G.A. A.G.M. on July 6th and “Amputee Awareness Day” on June 11th. The Q.A.G.A. Annual General Meeting took place before this months’ social golf event and both were well attended. The show of support for the Q.A.G.A. by the attendance of its members at the A.G.M. is something that has been lacking in recent years. Therefore it was great to see a good number of them present this year and with their continuing support, it is envisaged that your newly elected Board will face the challenges of change necessary to ensure a strong and viable association for the future. Change is never easy and unfortunately takes time to implement, however I am sure that the Board has your best interests at heart. Please be patient with them, I am sure that you will be happy with the results. Should you have any suggestions or questions regarding any matters concerning the Q.A.G.A. please feel free to speak to, or contact any of the Board members. In this light too, should you feel inclined to do so, the Board is happy to see you attend our regular Board Meetings, which will be held at the respective venues, preceding our Monthly golf events. Of course you can simply choose to come and play golf, there are no obligations to attend the meeting. NEW BOARD FOR 2008-09 The Members of your newly elected Board of Management for the 2008-09 year are as follows: President - Ivan “Woody” Walker. Vice President and Publicity Officer - Ben Tullipan Treasurer - Graham “Coxy” Cox Secretary - Graham Kenyon
T he June 11th Amputee Awareness Day “Introduction to Golf” initiated by the Q.A.G.A. rather than being solely a “golf” day, also turned out to be an opportunity to liase and build worthwhile relationships with other amputee organisations based in Queensland and was a great success. It appears that some of these amputee organisations have been trying to establish a working relationship with the Q.A.G.A. for some time but had not received a response from us. As such they were very pleased that the Q.A.G.A. had made the effort to include them in the days’ activities. Lunch and refreshments were provided by Q.A.L.S. who also brought with them amputee information packs, about services provided for amputees by both Q.A.L.S. and other groups in attendance. Respective representatives of the groups attending were introduced and our patron Charlie Earp, gave a brief talk about his involvement with disabled golfers over the years, he mentioned the benefits that these people received from participating in this great sport and Charlie also issued a challenge to those present (able bodied as well) to come and experience the game. This challenge was taken up by most and an interesting and informative coaching session, jointly hosted by Charlie and Sanctuary Cove professional Steve Darmody, followed on the club’s driving range. There are several people who need to be thanked for the success of this day. Firstly, Debra Berg and her staff from Q.A.L.S. One phone call to this lady resulted in a totally unexpected and overwhelmingly supportive response. To Cossette Urbani and her fellow members from the Amputee and Family Support Group, Bill Johnson and his team from the Gold Coast Amputee Advisory Service and to Q.A.G.A. members Barry Williamson, Ben Tullipan, their wives Liz and Kerrie-Anne, together with Ray Piper and David Male - thank you to all of you, for your time and support! Of course, what would we do without Charlie? His knowledge, sense of humour and ability to inspire are priceless. Many thanks to both you and your good wife Margaret, her patience amazes me. A special mention must also go to Shane Luke who flew up from Sydney for the day, just to “lend us a helping hand“. As well as assisting with coaching, when asked by Charlie he also provided a short, but always impressive display of his skill. Many thanks Shane - you really are a “champ”! One last comment - the popularity of the day was such, that all involved plan to repeat it again next year. Hopefully you will be there too. Swing sweet and have a great life! Cheers GK Just For Laughs A recent study found the average American golfer walks about 900 miles a
year. That means, on average American golfers get about 41 miles to the gallon just playing golf. Q.A.G.A. Social Golf Club Results: Robina Woods G. C. 6th July: Graham (“Chook Run”) Kenyon won the (reduced) 9 hole event with an impressive score of 22 pts. It should be noted that even with the addition of 9 more scoring opportunities his score would generally not improve, hence the nick name “chook run”. Graham is yet to receive a golf shirt for his efforts, the sail makers have run out of cloth. New amputee member Gary Atkinson, was second with 19 pts. beating Howard McLennan into 3rd place on a count back. Graham Lowe won the NAGA award and Nearest the Pin was won by Brent Taprell. Thanks to Coxy and Robina Woods Golf Club for a wet, but great day.
It appears that it was an event for 1st timers. Amongst the winners New South Welshman Ray Piper playing in his first Qld.
Amputee Championships won the Championship. Well done Ray !!! Kevin Pugh a new amputee from Qld playing in his first ever amputee
competition, won the Senior Best Net and Victorian Tim Matthews, also playing in
his first Qld. Championship was the Arm Division Gross Winner. |

QAGA SOCIAL GOLF CLUB A Social Golf Club was formed within the QAGA to provide monthly golf events for both amputees and our supporters. The club provides a fantastic opportunity for both amputees and supporters to bring further friends, family and business associates along, to experience first hand the primary aim of the Q.A.G.A. To assist in the rehabilitation of our fellow amputees. Being involved with fellow amputees in an enjoyable and healthy activity, whilst having a loving and supportive environment provided by their friends and families, allows new amputees to progress more rapidly in their recovery from the trauma of becoming an amputee. When asked to describe the new experience of participating in amputee golf, encouraging and inspirational are the most common adjectives, used by both amputee and able bodied attendees alike. We encourage you to start spreading the word about the QAGA Social Golf Club and to come and experience it for yourself. Everyone is welcome!
