NEWSLETTER: Vol 5 Issue 1 JANUARY 2010 Editorial
Hi Everyone! I trust that everyone had a great time over the festive season and it looks like we are headed for another fantastic year of Amputee Golf.
Last year saw the QAGA Social Golf Club play its final events on Saturday 6th of
December at Pacific Harbour Golf Club on We have already held our first event for the New Year on Sunday January 3rd, at the “Home” of amputee golf, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads G.C. and saw a great turn out for what was the inaugural “Tom Cross Memorial Sheild” Tom passed away a short time ago on December 11th and we were privileged to have Tom's wife Janice and his son Richard join us for the event so soon after his passing. The sheild will be held as an annual event to recognize the support given by Tom Cross to Australian amputee golfers . For those of you who did not have the pleasure of knowing him, Tom was one of the many members of Coolangatta Tweed who graciously gave of their time and energy in supporting and assisting the running of the first three Australian Amputee Opens at that club. When it was announced that the Open would be held at CTHGC, Tom as usual, (he always gave his support to any in need) was the first to stick his hand up, offering to help us in any way he could.
His helpful, friendly nature, willingness to share a joke and be made a joke of,
was part of his earthy character and he particularly enjoyed verbally jousting
with Steve “Chappy” Chapman from Jersey (in the He was a pleasure to have around He looked forward to and loved being around us too, “the gimps” as he lovingly called us and after 3 years, when it was decided to move the Open away from CTHGC and to have it held at different courses throughout our country, no one could have been more upset than Tom, he would constantly ask me “when are you bringing it back to Cooly Gra? I miss the b......s! ”. Unfortunately for us, you won’t physically be there when it does return Tom, but you sure as heck will be remembered by all who were here before. We’ll miss you "Crossy"!
I hope to see all you others soon Swing Sweet and Have a Great Life! GK
Q.A.G.A. Social Golf Club:
SATURDAY 6th December at A small but enthusiastic field saw Rod Burrows finally break through for his first win and he won the day with a score of 28 points. His score is indicative of this very enjoyable but extremely testing golf course, particularly on a windy day. Rod’s mate “Ugly” Rowsell ran a close second on 27 points and Neil Harvey 3rd with 24 points.
SUNDAY 7th December at Northlakes G. C: A much larger field the following day played another challenging course, although Northlakes tends to be a little more forgiving than P.H. It was great to see Ike Stalling and his son Luke joining us for the day, hopefully in the coming year we will see some more of those faces that haven’t been seen for a little while. Ray Whittle was successful with a great 38 points, much better than his effort at the same course last year when he was in very close contention for the N.A.G.A award. Happy new handicap Ray! Howard McLennan was second with 34 points off an 18 handicap – not before time “Ned”, enjoy your new handicap too! Third was Jim Neil on 33 points. N.T.P’s went to: 5th hole – Mark Sanders 8th hole – Ivan Woodrow 12th hole - Mark Sanders 16th hole – Howard McLennan
SUNDAY 3rd January at Coolangatta Tweed Heads G.c:
A 2 man ambrose, was the inaugural “Tom Cross Memorial Sheild”, and saw a field of 30 contest the event with a few interested onlookers as well.
Winners of the day with a net 64.5 were Wayne Rowlands and Norm Stone. Also befitting of the moment, in second place were Tom’s wife and son Janice and Richard Cross with a net score of 66. In 3rd place and very close behind were Jim Neil and Kate Wilson on 66.25.
N.T.P’s were won by: 3rd hole - A. Mercer 7th hole - K. Borger 10th hole – J. Turner 17th hole – R. Cross
Of greater interest, was to see our beloved Ken “Ugly” Rowsell back in his rightful place at the end of the field. Ken and his good mate Rod Burrows (who I suspect played a very important role in their result), were worthy winners of the NA.G.A. award with a score of 89.5.
Next game is at the Glades G.C. a fantastic course and in my humble opinion the best golf course on the Gold Coast. Normally it has a price of $100 +, BUT as a member of the QAGA Social Golf Club you pay only $65!! This alone is a savings equal to your membership fee, let alone the future savings and opportunities you will be presented with, when you play golf with the Q.A.G.A.
DON’T FORGET AMPS! The Q.A.G.A. AND AUSTRALIAN OPENS ARE JUST AROUND THE CORNER, REGISTER EARLY – IT MAKES IT EASIER ON ALL OF US!!
